Sultan Center Groceries Haul (Jan 2021)

I was feeling physically weak on and off, all throughout January, but I was having a particularly bad day

So…

I decided to go grocery shopping, as one does.

To be honest, thanks to the lockdown, I had discovered that I quite enjoyed cooking! I actually found it therapeutic. More than that, I enjoyed the fact that the people I cared for enjoyed my cooking, saying I had a knack for it.

Since I needed to get ingredients for certain recipes that I was gonna’ try making later on, not to mention the fact that I’d been wanting to introduce healthier food to the kids (my nieces and nephew lived on chicken nuggs), I figured I might as well hit up Sultan Center.

The Souq Sharq branch was my favorite because I found it quite peaceful (barely any people, most of the time) and I knew where everything was placed by heart. Also, there was always plenty of parking space outside.

First, I hit up the top floor (where all the Cookware/Bakeware used to be), grabbed a few things and made my way back to the ground floor.

Sultan Center Haul (Jan 2021)

Out of all the grocery stores in Kuwait, my favorite was The Sultan Center!

The Soug Sharg/Souq Sharq branch, to be more exact.

I knew the layout by heart.

I’d walk in, wheeling my shopping cart through the fresh produce aisle at the entrance, making a mental note of all the things I’d circle back for (mainly those lil apples).

Usually, I’d place the frozen stuff and fresh produce stuff in my shopping cart last, so they wouldn’t melt or defrost or wilt or spoil or whatever.

I’d skip the organic stuff aisle (eww healthy stuff) up until I got to the personal care aisle and snag some makeup remover, cotton pads, face wash, etc… The other side would have shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, facing each other.

I’d skip the cleaning supplies aisle up until I got to the cooking stuff aisle (sauces and other condiments). I’d grab a few tins of baked beans or a box of pasta or whatever else I was craving. Then move on on to the next aisle and fill up my cart accordingly.

Eventually, I’d make it to the cookies and biscuits aisle which would be facing the chocolates aisle and on the other side, the candy aisle facing the potato chips aisle.

I’d check for my beloved Coco Mojo in the unrefrigerated drinks section before hitting up the refrigerated section (all the way towards the end) where I’d grab some bacon, smoked turkey, fruit yogurt, etc… and work my way back to the fresh produce aisle (walking freezer-side to keep an eye out for ice-cream or frozen pizza that looked particularly yummy).

Finally, I’d circle back to the fresh produce aisle, pick up some grapes or apples or whatever my latest recipe called for, and head towards the checkout counter.

Sadly, that’s all out the window because they renovated the place and the entire layout is completely different now!

The frozen section is right across the fresh produce section (which is convenient tbh) but I don’t like the rest of the layout :(

I noticed the renovations starting around April but before that, I hit up Sultan Center in January.

Sultan Center Haulage (Souq Sharq) (Sept 2020)

After hitting up Debenhams (here) and Bath & Body Works (here) and The Body Shop (here), I finally made it to Sultan Center.

Between my brother and his wife’s weekly visits to the local co-op, and my online orders from taw9eel.com (My Pantry), we were all set on groceries.

So, this haul was mostly snackage (stuff I couldn’t find online) and personal care stuff (face wash, cotton pads, etc…)

Hair Care Collective Haulage (taw9eel.com + Sultan Center)

During the lockdown, I was pretty much swimming on the daily and consequentially sharing my Shampoo with friends and family. Naturally, I was starting to run low on Shampoo and it was starting to worry me.

I wasn’t certain how long the online stores would remain open during the lockdown (thinking they could all shut down at any moment).

So, I stocked up on not only Shampoo but Conditioner and Oil Replacement and even Hair Serums.

Did I overdo it? Possibly, but then again, we were in the midst of a pandemic.

Chef LuLu (Part 1)

Initially, I started off with the boxed stuff, like Betty Crocker Cake Mix and Betty Crocker Brownies and so on, except I’d try little hacks on them, for example, poking holes in the Cake and pouring Condensed Milk over top, while it was still fresh out of the Oven, to create a Poke Cake. You can find a ton of other Cake Mix Hacks on YouTube, if you’re interested.

I didn’t like how metallic the boxed Brownies tasted, so I learned how to make them from scratch, tweaking the recipe a little more each time, until I perfected it. I also enjoyed baking regular ol’ Chocolate Chip Cookies from scratch.

Aside from our Oven proving to be very problematic (full deets here), I couldn’t get my hands on a lot of ingredients (reasons mentioned here), for example Brown Sugar (which was needed to be mixed with regular White Sugar) for Cookies and things like that. I ended up having to mix Syrup with White Sugar to create a substitute for Brown Sugar.

Skills, yo!

Skillz, yo!

Except for those on the front lines (medics and other first responders and whatnot), we all had a lot of time on our hands in 2020, particularly during the lockdown.

I chose to use that time to develop a skill and eventually master it (I practice what I preach).

It wasn’t really a new skill because I’ve dabbled in it before (Awesome Blossom/Blooming Onion and Elote Mexican Street Corn), but during the lockdown, I can confidently state that I’ve mastered it.

It started off with the best tasting cookies I’ve baked on March 3 (here). After that, I became obsessed!

I started looking up recipes online and trying them out and customizing them as I went along. You name it, I made it!

2020 (The First Half)

There was a lot (and I mean a lot) of stuff that I’d planned on writing about, as soon as I finished my Bath & Body Works Hauls, from earlier on in the year (this).

However, between my hair and my nails and my teeth and my heart I kinda’ got preoccupied and didn’t get around to doing much blogging.

Not to mention the fact that 2020 was a pretty horrible year all around (not just for me personally, but in general and worldwide). That in and of itself deserves a whole other separate post (maybe I’ll work on it, maybe not, we’ll see).

In any case, the following is all the stuff I had planned on talking about on my blog, but never got around to (because… 2020).

Edit: I’d started writing this post way before the tragic passing of His Highness Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, may he rest in peace. Like I said, this year has been awful.

Takis Destroyed My Teeth (chatty post)

The title pretty much says it all. I discovered a newfound love for Takis, binged on the stuff (typical LuLu) and ended up ruining my teeth lol

It took several visits to “fix” the issue, starting from November 2019 up until April 2020 and the issue still hasn’t been resolved. Needless to say, I had to swear off Takis.

Collective Snackage Haulage (Sultan Center Souq Sharq, Sultan Center Salmiya, City Center Salmiya)

Back in December, my cousin’s wife served me a can of tasty Lychee Drink when I was over at my uncle’s home. It was sooo good that I’ve been searching for the exact same stuff ever since.

All I can remember was there was an illustration of Lychee and a Melon and possibly a Pear on the front, and the can itself was pale pink with white polka-dots and was either made in Malaysia or Thailand based on the writing (I dunno’).

During early December, I hit up both the Souq Sharq branch and Salmiya branch of Sultan Center and the Salmiya branch of City Center (ergo Collective Snackage Haulage) and bought a ton of other groceries as well, but couldn’t fit everything into one photo, so I didn’t even bother attempting it.

The drinks in the 1st photo were all from City Center Hypermarket (Salmiya). As you can see, it was very lychee-oriented lol

Can’t very well go to Souq Sharq without making a quick stop at Sultan Center, now can I?
