Hair Removal during the Lockdown

It’s not the sexiest of topics, but Hair Removal during the Lockdown was an issue and as such, I feel the need to talk about it now lol

First of all, if you haven’t already, check out my post on Hair Removal (here). I feel like it’s an interesting read, if I do say so myself (I do!) lol

As I said earlier in My Story: Shaving (here) typically I’ll use Gillette Blue II Disposable Razors (reviewed here) in conjunction with Nivea For Men Cool Kick Shaving Foam (reviewed here) to shave my underarms and legs.

As for my bikini area, I prefer to shave it dry (sans shaving foam). For my brows, I used my trusty Tweezerman Tweezers (the ones from Boots were absolute garbage lol). None of those areas were an issue. I could find disposable razors and shaving creams and foams and even tweezers all on taw9eel.com (My Pantry).

The issue was with the upper lip area. Typically, I’d get my upper lip area waxed and then for the invisible tiny hairs, a once over with thread, all at the salon. During the pandemic, there was no salon.

I called up all my friends and family (even the ones abroad) to see how they were handling the situation and not one of them was helpful! lol

Apparently, they were all between sessions of laser hair removal when the pandemic hit, meaning they only had the whiskers on the sides to contend with, which they just shaved off every few days. I was definitely not going to do that (slippery slope with an unknown end).

Some of my more self-sufficient friends had taught themselves how to thread their own face (and even provided me with a How-To Video on YouTube). There wasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that I was ever going to learn how to do that (my hand-eye coordination was not up to par).

That’s when I remembered my own post (Hair Removal) and asked my sister-in-law to pick up a box of Wax Strips on her next run to the cooperative (you had to schedule your visit to the supermarket during the lockdown so my sister-in-law and my younger brother were taking turns buying groceries and whatnot for the house).

She couldn’t find Face Strips but did find Body Strips. Aside from the difference in size, I figured they were both effectively the same. So that’s what I used, up until the salons opened back up again!

Spotted at Perfume & Makeup Exhibition

(Photo nicked off the Mishref Fair Grounds Website).

I try to make it a point to visit the Perfume & Makeup Exhibition at least once a year. The Perfume & Cosmetics Exhibition takes place twice a year (March and then again in Oct-Nov) in Hall 5 and Hall 6 and Hall 8 at Mishref Fair Grounds. As you can see, the Halls are huge! They’ve always got something or other going on there (sometimes simultaneously), year-round! This year, I noticed that they had strung up pretty fairy lights and arranged a seating area somewhere outside, with a ton of trendy pop-ups in cute little shacks that were catering the event, on either side of the seating area! I actually took a handful of pics, but people’s faces were on full display so I can’t show ’em (privacy blah blah blah consent blah blah blah).

Unfortunately, the majority of the halls participating in the Perfume & Cosmetics Exhibition mainly feature Oud and Teeb (Arab Fragrances), with only a smaller portion of booths featuring “French Perfumes” and an even smaller portion featuring Makeup. Heck, one of the Halls (I wanna’ say Hall 7) was reserved solely and entirely for Boutiqaat (at one point, I saw a tumbleweed roll by).

I’ve been going to the Perfume & Makeup Exhibition for years decades! In fact, even before I used to go there, my mom would get me a Lancome Mascara Gift Set when I was a teen (drugstore brands weren’t as readily available in Kuwait back then). Even just 8 years back, Victoria’s Secret used to participate (here) as did Sephora (here). It’s also where I first spotted China Glaze (here) and Lush (here). Now, it’s so very different (not in a good way) from what it once was…

Boots Haulage (October)

I popped in to Boots in the hopes of picking up the St. Tropez Self Tan “Purity” Bronzing Water Mousse (spotted earlier, here). Unfortunately, they were out of stock (I knew I should’ve purchased it, at the time). I believe they had a “15% off” Gosh Makeup, whereas all the other makeup brands were “25% off”. They also had a “Buy One Get One Free” promo on select brands. As per usual, the “Buy One Get One Free” did not extend to St. Tropez or K-Beauty (typical). Still, since I was there, I figured I might as well make the most of it. I picked up x2 Smokey Eye Brushes (one ended up being free) and a pair of Tweezers (to apply falsies) and repurchased that gorgeous Serum Mascara! The sales assistant also ended up tossing in a Bronzer for free (which was nice of her). Next time I see anything remotely interesting at Boots, I’m just going to go ahead and purchase it (then and there)! This is my millionth time returning to the same branch to buy the St. Tropez Bronzing Water and my millionth time not being able to find it lol

ELF Summer Haulage (in-depth deets)

Order placed: August 22
Order shipped from ELF: August 29
Order forwarded from US Aramex Mailbox: August 30
Order arrived in Kuwait (undergoing clearance): September 2
Order received: September 9 (it’s a whole song and dance, I tell ya’)

Just like your average, run-of-the-mill, everday addict, I was craving my next hit of inexpensive makeup (hey, it could be worse). As I said in my previous post (here) ELF had come out with 4 new makeup brushes, in addition to a several very interesting new products. Plus, the Free Gift Set (with orders of $25+) actually seemed worthwhile. Plus, I’d racked up enough points from their loyalty program to spend. Plus, they were giving away a full-sized product as a Free Sample.

I had my eye on several of the creamier makeup products, as well as some skincare, but I was worried that they might go bad or melt in the heat. That’s why I decided to wait until the weather cools down in Kuwait before ordering them and also why this particular order consisted mostly of powder products, makeup brushes and tools (products that were relatively unaffected by heat).

That said, I wasn’t sure that Aramex would even deliver some of the skincare items, especially the sprays (due to shipping restrictions) so just to experiment (test the waters), I ordered a full sized 3.38 fl. oz. (100 mL) Cleanser and a full sized 2.70 fl. oz. (80 mL) Setting Mist, both of which actually made their way to me (yay)!

So now I know… and knowing is half the battle (Yo, Joe!)

Eyes Lips Face (ELF) Summer Haulage

Since my previous order (haulage here), about 4 months ago, ELF had come out with a bunch of new products (including 4 new Makeup Brushes). At the time of this order, they had a promo which included a Free Plump It Up Gift (3pc) with any $25+ order, in addition to a Free Sample with every purchase. I’d accumulated enough points (you get 50 point just for signing up) to pick out a Free Gift of my choice (from select items). I figured it was worth placing an order right then and taking advantage of all the deals and promos and such. Mostly, I just wanted to give those Makeup Brushes a try!

Generally, I try to stick to a budget of around $100 (otherwise it’d be too easy to go overboard without even realizing it). The subtotal for this order was $100 (minus the $8.87 sales tax), which I felt was close enough to my personal target.

Makeup (Eye Stuff, Lip Stuff, Face Stuff, geddit? ELF lawl)

Tools (Makeup Brushes, Sharpener, Tweezers, Lash Curler, etc…)

Spotted at Sephora (Summer)

I visited Sephora again (seriously, they need to move the store to a more accessible area of the Avenues already, like maybe switch out Sephora with Next so people can access Sephora both from inside and outside the mall for quick drive-bys. I mean their current location is so out of the way from everything else!) and also, because I still didn’t get my Brand Gift (for reaching 200 points) even though I’ve already received the e-mail from the Dubai branch of Sephora. While there, I spotted several new displays (as shown above), new products and new brands!!!!

For starters they had a Mini Mania display (sooo cute!) mostly of cult fave products available in mini-sizes separated into 4 categories (all of which we’ll be taking a much closer look at, below) ranging from Speedy SportSunny BeachTrendy WorkFunky Party.

Local Co-op Haul

I just wanted to pick up another Nivea (For Men) Shaving Foam (full review here) and ended up getting another one of those Colgate 360 Toothbrushes (this time in Gold… yuck), some really cute Bandaids (can’t resist those) and Tweezers (neon). Cool Kick seems to have been renamed to Fresh & Cool now. Hey, as long as it performs the same, they could call it Chemicals in a Can, for all I care.
