City Center Shuwaikh Hypermarket (Jan 2021)

Back in the day, I used to work in a company located in Shuwaikh.

I spent many years there, enough to notice them emptying the lot, preparing for what was to be a new City Center Hypermarket.

They had already begun the construction work by the time I left.

I switched jobs and consequentially locations, and never got to check out the Shuwaikh branch of City Center… until now.

Truthfully, I was on the hunt for hangers.

My closet was finally finished and I needed a ton of hangers and was looking to buy them in bulk.

While I did not find any decent hangers, I did manage to grab a few “healthy” snacks.

Sultan Center Haul (Jan 2021)

Out of all the grocery stores in Kuwait, my favorite was The Sultan Center!

The Soug Sharg/Souq Sharq branch, to be more exact.

I knew the layout by heart.

I’d walk in, wheeling my shopping cart through the fresh produce aisle at the entrance, making a mental note of all the things I’d circle back for (mainly those lil apples).

Usually, I’d place the frozen stuff and fresh produce stuff in my shopping cart last, so they wouldn’t melt or defrost or wilt or spoil or whatever.

I’d skip the organic stuff aisle (eww healthy stuff) up until I got to the personal care aisle and snag some makeup remover, cotton pads, face wash, etc… The other side would have shampoo, conditioner, body wash, soap, facing each other.

I’d skip the cleaning supplies aisle up until I got to the cooking stuff aisle (sauces and other condiments). I’d grab a few tins of baked beans or a box of pasta or whatever else I was craving. Then move on on to the next aisle and fill up my cart accordingly.

Eventually, I’d make it to the cookies and biscuits aisle which would be facing the chocolates aisle and on the other side, the candy aisle facing the potato chips aisle.

I’d check for my beloved Coco Mojo in the unrefrigerated drinks section before hitting up the refrigerated section (all the way towards the end) where I’d grab some bacon, smoked turkey, fruit yogurt, etc… and work my way back to the fresh produce aisle (walking freezer-side to keep an eye out for ice-cream or frozen pizza that looked particularly yummy).

Finally, I’d circle back to the fresh produce aisle, pick up some grapes or apples or whatever my latest recipe called for, and head towards the checkout counter.

Sadly, that’s all out the window because they renovated the place and the entire layout is completely different now!

The frozen section is right across the fresh produce section (which is convenient tbh) but I don’t like the rest of the layout :(

I noticed the renovations starting around April but before that, I hit up Sultan Center in January.

Chef LuLu (Part 10) Final Post

December 18

I turned 36! Coulda’ sworn I was turning 37 (I’m bad at math lol) but after a certain point, does it really matter?

Aside from our usual go-to Birthday Cake from Cake’d my favorite cousin also sent over a cute little Cake! May surprised me with a Unicorn Brush Set and some Face Masks with a beautiful Birthday Card using our special language which we created (we had a lot of free time as kids lol). Abrar got me a gorgeous bouquet of Red Roses with a Gift Card for an at-home service (Mani-Pedi). The list goes on and on.

My favorite gift was from my younger brother and his wife though (shown in the photo above) which was a rather large basket filled with Baking Tools (everything from a Rolling Pin to a Brownie Pan and much much more)!

I was quite touched by everyone’s kindness! They didn’t have to get me anything but they did and it was just so thoughtful and sweet! ♥

Chef LuLu (Part 9 + Goodbye Mera)

December 2

I decided to introduce my newest friend (Mera) to my oldest friend (my bestie) so I invited them to BBQ by the Pool.

Chef LuLu (Part 6 + More Mera Drama)

September 1

Of course since Mera had enjoyed the Ice Cream at Vermilion, we just had to go there again and again and again (it was her MO, revisit until we were sick of it, ugh).

You can see me hamming it up for the camera (lol) while we waited for our turn. Mera is the one next to me with huge sunglasses.

Since Mera was parked incorrectly (cringe) she had to leave (suspiciously right before it was time to pay).

Meanwhile, I chatted with this absolute darling of a woman, who agreed to let me take a photo of her pretty hand holding up the Ice Cream in the flavor Black Gold, complete with the Charcoal Biscuit Cone (for my Snapchat).

Chef LuLu (Part 5)

August 1

I don’t know why but this seemed easy to me. I was set on making Choux au Craquelin (Cracked Cream Puffs)!

I mixed 1/4 tsp of Salt with 1/2 Cup Sugar and 1/4 Cup Corn Starch and 2 Egg Yolks and 1 Large Egg. I whisked it until the Yellow Mixture turned into a Light Beige (it’s noticeable).

Then, I heated 2 Cups of Milk in a Sauce Pan and added 1 tsp of Vanilla Essence and let it simmer for a few minutes. Next, I poured some of the Milk into the Egg Mix (gradually, so the Egg wouldn’t cook).

Next, I placed the Egg + Milk Mix back on the fire for 5 minutes. Afterwards, I added 4 tbs of Buttah! With the fire off, I stirred the Butter in.

Chef LuLu (Part 4)

July 12

So, I found these boxes of Ice cream Powder in the flavors Strawberry and Chocolate and Vanilla from the brand Dreem on taw9eel.com and decided to give them a try. No Ice Cream Machine needed!

Basically, you just mixed the Ice Cream Powder with Milk, use the Electric Mixer on high for about 5 minutes, then pop it in any Dish and store it in the freezer (for it to freeze into Ice Cream)! Super fast and simple and easy!

Chef LuLu (Part 2)

May 25

Once again, past midnight (which was usually when I got the urge to “make things” in the Kitchen) I made some more Home-Made Froyo (recipe to come!) this time using Strawberry Jello (which turned everything a cute pink)!

May 26

Mini Pancake Cereal was trending (ugh, TikTok) so I decided to hop on that trend!

Chef LuLu (Part 1)

Initially, I started off with the boxed stuff, like Betty Crocker Cake Mix and Betty Crocker Brownies and so on, except I’d try little hacks on them, for example, poking holes in the Cake and pouring Condensed Milk over top, while it was still fresh out of the Oven, to create a Poke Cake. You can find a ton of other Cake Mix Hacks on YouTube, if you’re interested.

I didn’t like how metallic the boxed Brownies tasted, so I learned how to make them from scratch, tweaking the recipe a little more each time, until I perfected it. I also enjoyed baking regular ol’ Chocolate Chip Cookies from scratch.

Aside from our Oven proving to be very problematic (full deets here), I couldn’t get my hands on a lot of ingredients (reasons mentioned here), for example Brown Sugar (which was needed to be mixed with regular White Sugar) for Cookies and things like that. I ended up having to mix Syrup with White Sugar to create a substitute for Brown Sugar.
