Ramadan this year happened to coincide with Nordstrom’s annual “Pick 3 Mascaras, Get 1 of them Free” deal. Apparently, most people take advantage of this opportunity, to go after some of the more expensive mascaras (I’m talkin’ crazy expensive).
However, since it was boiling hot in Kuwait, towards the end of May, I wasn’t as willing to risk spending a crazy amount on mascaras, that might possibly arrive all dried up, especially since, after purchasing a handful of Kaftans via Instagram for Ramadan, I was pretty much skint. In fact, I was so broke, I actually debated whether I should just skip ordering online, for the time being.
Then again, the deal on mascaras was too good to pass up! Also, after spending a certain amount, customers qualified for the “Sample Pack of the month” (haulage here), not to mention the Gift with Purchase which totally sweetened the deal!
Unfortunately, it seemed that once again, something had leaked in-transit.
Just for that, Nordstrom is no longer a 10/10 in my book, and has since been knocked down to a 9.9 (ruthless) lol
The stuff I payed for is against the wall:
– x3 Mascaras (Buy 2 Get 1 Free Deal)
– Sunscreen Stick
– Travel-Size Candle
Everything else was free:
– Lancome 4pc Gift with Purchase (free with $49.50 Lancome purchase)
– May Sample Pack (free with any $100 Nordstrom purchase) (haulage here)
– 3 samples (free with every order)
– Lancôme Mascara Primer (free with any masacara purchase)
Can you blame me for loving and continuing to purchase from Nordstrom?
– x2 Lancome Oscillation Mascara in the shade Black Motion which retail for $73.00 ($36.50 each) or KD 23/940 (KD 11/970 each)
– Yves Saint Laurent Le Curler Mascara in the shade Ombre Black which retails for $29.00 KD 9/500
(since it was the lowest priced mascara, ended up being Free)
– Supergoop! Glow Stick Sunscreen SPF50 which retails for $25.00 KD 8/200
– Boy Smells Candle in the scent Purple Kush which retails for $16.00 KD 5/250
In addition to the x3 Mascaras (1 of which ended up being Free), I picked up some Sunscreen (stick form) and a Candle (travel size), to bump up the total of my order so I could qualify for the May Sample Pack (haulage here).
I ended up going for two tubes of my tried and true favorite (Lancome Oscillation) and one tube of a mascara that was new to me (Yves Saint Laurent The Curler). I had to pay full price for both Lancome Mascaras, but since it was the lowest priced, I got the Yves Saint Laurent Mascara for free.
I won’t go over Lancome Oscillation because I’ve already done that before, but clearly, I’m a huge fan! I’ve repurchased it several times now (twice from Nordstrom alone, here and again here and two more in this post)! I’ve even referenced it a couple of times on my blog and actually written up a full review on it, way back in the day (here)! Oscillation is excellent on its own, but I love it as a topper over other mascaras!
Receive a deluxe sample of Lancôme Cils Booster XL Vitamin-Infused Mascara Primer with your purchase of any mascara.
As promised, I did receive a deluxe sample of Lancôme Cils Booster along with my mascara purchase.
As I said in my previous post (here), I’ve accumulated a bunch of these Lancome Cils Boosters, at this point. It’s nothing mind-blowing, but for a Mascara Primer, it’s actually pretty decent.
Lancome Gift with Purchase
Receive deluxe samples of L’Absolu Rouge Hydrating Shaping Lip Color in Nuit & Jour (0.12 oz.), Cils Booster XL Vitamin-Infused Mascara Primer (0.07 oz.), Hypnôse Drama Instant Full Volume Mascara (0.135 oz.) and Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover (1.7 oz.) with your $49.50 Lancôme purchase.
Also, since both Lancome Mascaras amounted to more than $49.50 I qualified for the 4pc Lancome Gift with Purchase for the month of May.
– Bi-Facil Double-Action Eye Makeup Remover (1.7 oz.)
– Cils Booster XL Vitamin-Infused Mascara Primer (0.07 oz.)
– Hypnôse Drama Instant Full Volume Mascara (0.135 oz.)
– L’Absolu Rouge Hydrating Shaping Lip Color in Nuit & Jour (0.12 oz.)
I want to like Bi-Facil because it’s pretty much a staple in every Lancome Set or Lancome Gift with Purchase (both locally and online), but it doesn’t fully remove my Mascara and ends up giving me foggy vision.
The Cils Booster is also almost always included as freebie. For a Mascara Primer, it’s aight.
Honestly, I just love Mascara in general and would be happy with any Mascara, in any size (as long as it was Black). That said, I’ve actually purchased the full size of Hypnose Drama, on and off, ever since it was first released. I quite like it, so I was thankful to receive a mini!
As for the Lipstick, it was tiny and so stinkin’ cute! Even the name Nuit & Jour (which translates into “Night & Day”) seemed perfect for the beautiful nude shade! The finish was seemingly similar to MAC’s Cremesheen Lipsticks, with semi-opaque coverage and a somewhat glossy finish.
L’Absolu Rouge Hydrating Shaping Lip Color in Nuit & Jour (0.12 oz.)
Unfortunately, it didn’t translate well to the lips. It clung to everything! It sank into every crack, every crevice and every line on my lips! Even after my lips were buffed and polished to perfection, Nuit & Jour still looked horrible! I suppose I could use it as a topper over other lippies, to lighten them up or maybe slick on a coat of clear gloss or something…
Needless to say, disappointing.
Yves Saint Laurent The Curler Mascara
What it is: A curling mascara featuring a unique hybrid brush that dramatically curls and defines lashes for an unparalleled full fan effect.
What it does: Ditch the eyelash curler. This breakthough mascara with a long-lasting formula and its hybrid brush technology work together to instantly lift and lengthen lashes with extraordinary curl and volume. The curved elastomer combs on each side of the brush ensure clean and full definition, while rounded fiber bristles create dimension and curl. Comfortably build standout lashes that will never smudge or clump!
I was quite excited to try out Le Curler or The Curler, but was very disappointed by its performance!
For starters, both the brush and the wand itself, kept accidentally leaving smudges all over my face! Also, any time the the rubber bristles got too close to my lids, they’d scratch them up (which is a pet peeve of mine, when it comes to plastic or rubber bristles, and precisely why I prefer the wire brush with nylons protruding out of it, as opposed to plastic or rubber bristles that scratch my lids).
That said, the curve on the hot pink brush on Le Curler was pure gorgeousness! From the moment I twisted it out of the tube and saw the curve on the brush, I was positive it would fan my lashes out beautifully! Unfortunately, that was not the case. It took for-ever to build up! After a certain point, it stopped lengthening and curling all-together, and instead began clumping my lashes together (making them look like tarantula legs)! No bueno!
All that aside, I’m willing to give this baby another shot. I’m thinkin’, maybe its poor performance has more to do with the heat and the fact that it may have dried up before reaching me. I suppose I’ll reorder it once the weather allows, or if it’s available locally, just repurchase it wherever it’s being sold.
Strangely enough, it had a wonderful fruity smell! I’m not sure if it was a fluke, or something had spilled on it during transit (nothing else that I’d ordered, shared that same delightful scent) or if Le Curler just smelled that way, but it smelled delicious!
Supergoop! Glow Stick Sunscreen SPF50 (35g/1.23 oz.)
What it is: A sunscreen stick that delivers glow-boosting hydration plus broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection on the go.
What it does: It’s formulated with Amazonian Oils, which help protect the skin from UV and visible light damage, while a blend of fatty acids in the form of Omegas 3, 6 and 9 deliver antioxidants and restore balance to moisture-depleted skin, creating a more even, smoother and healthier-looking complexion.
How to use: Apply to skin after your moisturizer to lock in hydration, or use throughout the day on your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, your chest and shoulders to keep your glow and SPF on. Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours when in direct sunlight. It is water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.
While browsing the many, many, many local stores via Instagram for Ramadan Kaftans, I was bombarded with all kinds of advertisements. One of the ads that captured my interest was of the Supergoop! Glow Stick Sunscreen being applied to a beautiful East Asian Model and giving her that gorgeous lit-from-within glow! I made a mental note to check (at a later time) if the product was available online. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to find it, but as luck would have it, when I went on Nordstrom, I found it and consequentially ordered it!
No twist-y type of mechanism was visible, so it took me a sec to figure out how to get the product to extend out of the packaging lol Basically, you had to push it up from the bottom (like a Push Pop). Since I couldn’t figure out how to get the product back down, I just used the very hi-tech method of mashing it up against my cheek and applying pressure, until the product had receded back in its container. That should account for its less than pristine condition in the close-up (it didn’t occur to me to take a picture of it beforehand).
Also, I was expecting it to have a scent, any scent, but it smelled like… nothing. However, once I got it on my face, it had that “dust-y” smell, that many facial moisturizers tend to have, which I find annoying. I slicked it all over my face and proceeded to rub it in, using both hands. It felt slightly greasy, like an oil, or like a Sun Tan Oil, rather. It didn’t feel moisturizing, at all. In fact, it felt like it was just sittin’ on top of my skin, without ever being fully absorbed. It occurred to me that I should take a look in the mirror, so I checked my reflection out in the elevator (because it had a rather large mirror and decent lighting) and let me tell you, my face looked like an oil slick! Grrr
I’d applied this stuff very generously, all over my face, even on my brows and under-eye area. As expected, it had migrated towards the corners of my eyes and consequentially, they started to sting. It wasn’t as bad as the burn from my beloved Makeup Remover or even the burn from inserting a dirty contact, but it wasn’t subtle nor comfortable either. Foggy vision (pet peeve) was the icing on the cake lol
Much, much later, I took another look in the elevator mirror and saw that this stuff had absorbed into my skin. In fact, I looked 10 years younger (at least)! My skin looked great! Worthy of note, I’ve got dry skin and I’m absolutely terrible when it comes to moisturizing (I don’t feel like doing it all the time, ok?) so I was bound to notice a difference. However, if you’ve got oily skin, I cannot guarantee that you’ll get the same result.
The result was nowhere near what I saw on Instagram, but I just can’t resist a gimmicky product. I’m pretty happy with the end result, regardless, and I can’t wait to see how this stuff performs underneath makeup!
Boy Smells Purple Kush Candle (3 oz.)
Poured into a black glass votive and fitted with a braided cotton wick, this modern, intoxicating candle is made from a rich blend of coconut wax and beeswax.
Infused with the green, bright notes of Cannabis and Brushed Suede, it has subtle floral hints of Tulip, Purple Cassis and Lilac. White Musk and Amber Accord ground the fragrance.
The candles by the brand Boy Smells were one of the first candles that caught my eye on Nordstrom (during my very first order), particularly Ash and Cinderose! In fact, I was this close to purchasing a trio, during my first order, except the ones I wanted were divided into different trios.
Kush was always available, but I wasn’t as interested in it. However, when I saw that they were now selling Purple Kush and in the smaller size, I decided to snatch that sucka’ up! Plus, it helped bump up the total of my order so I could qualify for the May Sample Pack.
Even though I haven’t burned Purple Kush yet (still working my way through my Bath & Body Works Candles), I’ve already got my eye on the new-new Chromesthesia Series (behavior which produces a visual impression based on stimuli; in this case, through scent)!
May Sample Pack
Get a Free Gift with Your $100 Beauty or Fragrance Purchase.
Plus, when you spend $150 on beauty or fragrance, you’ll also receive a Bonus Gift.
Also, since the total of my order was around $100 I qualified for the May Sample Pack.
The May Sample Pack contained several exciting samples, namely Skin Care and Hair Care, but also a Fragrance Sample of Alien by Mugler!
I listed everything included in the May Sample Pack in my previous post (here).
– Chanel Sublimage L’Essence Lumiere Ultimate Light-Revealing Concentrate
– Sisley Paris Sisleÿa L’Intégral Anti-Age Eye & Lip Contour Cream
– La Mer The Moisturizing Soft Cream
Lastly, with every order, you got to pick x3 samples from a handful of pre-selected ones.
I chose absurdly expensive skincare samples; yet another sample of the La Mer Soft Cream (I’ll start using them consecutively once I’ve accumulated a week’s worth), and Sisley Eye & Lip Contour Cream (just because I suspect that Sisley utilize extremely potent ingredients, otherwise why else would they be crazy expensive?) and Chanel Light-Revealing Concentrate (featuring Anthyllis, which is the French Herb that draws strength from natural light. I mean, don’t all plants kinda’ do that anyway?)…
Realistically, I don’t believe I’m actually going to purchase any of them (unless I’m really blown away by their performance). However, I figured I could use the high end skincare samples and compare them to the stuff I usually purchase (drugstore skincare lol), just for fun!
Here’s everything in this order. Again, it might look like a lot, but it’s only x3 Mascaras and a Sunscreen Stick and a small Candle, while the rest are just samples.
As a product-junkie, I enjoy playing around with new stuff (even the single-use samples) and at the moment Nordstrom seems like the best place to get my fix! These monthly Sample Packs (gift with purchase) remind me of the now defunct Beauty.com (gone but not forgotten), which regularly had something similar (sampler pack as a gift with purchase) and I used to love those as well! I got to try out many, many, many different products and brands, that I never would’ve gotten the chance to, otherwise! That’s yet another reason why I simply adore Nordstrom!
Hope you enjoyed this post!
