Before Brooklyn Nine-Nine there was Cuckoo! Now, in the interest of full disclosure, it took several tries to get me hooked on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Aside from Captain Ray Holt and Rosa Diaz (their deadpan faces absolutely slay me), I didn’t find it to be all that funny. Some episodes make me chuckle while others were just… meh. After The Office (obviously the U.S. version) and 30 Rock, I can’t seem to find a comedy series that’ll make me laugh until I cry!
Netflix was slowly going up in estimation, so when Cuckoo popped up on my queue list, I decided to give it a chance. I laughed so hard that I couldn’t breathe… during every other episode! Greg Davies (Inbetweeners) and Andy Samberg co-star in Cuckoo… and I should’ve just led with that lol
Greg Davies plays the role of the father of the household. Helen Baxendale (her face and accent and everything was just so familiar… come to find out she was Emma on Friends lol) plays the role of the mother. In the middle is Cuckoo (played by Andy Samberg).
As you might’ve already surmised, it’s a British Show and as such, not many might be able to appreciate that kind of sense of humor. Personally, I love it and cannot get enough! Heck, just looking at Greg Davies’s disgruntled expressions is enough to get me giggling! Also, I could now finally understand Andy Samberg’s appeal as a comedian! He is fun-ny, well, at least in this role! They all have their moments, but in my eyes Greg Davies in the role of the patriarch of the family, is next-level funny! He kills it! In fact, the entire show is hilarious! It’s very light (as each episode is about 30 minutes long) and easy to watch! I’ve only watched Season 1 through Season 4 but can’t wait to binge-watch Season 5!
Unfortunately, several of the actors get switched out from season to season…
After Season 1 Andy Samberg doesn’t return the show. It seems he ditched them for Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
To replace him, they bring in Taylor Lautner (Twilight) who appears in Season 2 through Season 4, but doesn’t return in Season 5. The show was less funny with him in it (his high-pitched laugh could incite me to murder), but thankfully Greg Davies was still around to carry the show! Once Taylor Lautner appeared in the show (blech), it totally explained why there was a pic of him down on one knee when you hovered over Cuckoo on Netflix.
Lastly, the girl who plays Greg Davies’s daughter gets switched out in the next season and we’re just supposed to go along with it and pretend that it’s the same girl lol
Despite the fact that the main character flew the cuckoo’s nest and abandoned them for another show lol I thoroughly enjoyed Cuckoo and absolutely loved Season 1!
The trailer isn’t that funny and contains spoilers, but it’s there if you wanna’ watch it anyway. I’d say get on Netflix and watch the first episode or two, and if you’re not hooked, then I guess Cuckoo probably isn’t for you. If you get it, you get it. If not, that’s cool too. Personally, I loved it and though it was a ridiculously funny show and definitely worth re-watching too (which is something I rarely do)!
