The Walking Dead Season 8 Episode 2 “The Damned”

Called it.

Warning Spoilers Ahead

So, the premiere wasn’t all that exciting and neither was the second episode. It’s not that it was uneventful because a lot of stuff did actually go down. It just wasn’t… exciting. It wasn’t suspenseful (at least not for me) and I just didn’t feel all that invested. I guess I was expecting… more.

I was a bit confused at the beginning and I genuinely thought that I’d accidentally skipped an episode (which was impossible because the previous episode was the premiere) just based on how this one started (I don’t recall someone lobbing a bomb at Carol, Ezekiel & Co.). Things didn’t get much better throughout the episode. It took a minute for it to register that the gunfight was between the lesser known Saviors and the lesser known Alexandrians (couldn’t tell them apart, at first).

More importantly, I really do not approve of Ezekiel flirting with Carol. Carol has been my favorite since Season 1 (because to me, she looks like an anime character; beautiful green eyes, almost Scandinavian/Nordic nose, and regal – if not magical – silver hair). I was obsessed with her (much to the annoyance of both brothers because I wouldn’t shut up about her) way before she became a bad-ass. She’s won my older brother over (eventually) but my younger brother keeps comparing her to a cat (due to her tendency of wandering off, doing her own thing, and never listening to Rick). That said, I think she grew on him and he secretly likes her too, despite the fact that he makes alley-cat noises every time Carol ignores someone or wanders off. Anyways, the point of all that was that I’ve been shipping Daryl and Carol since Season 2. I mean, I’m not some crazy fangirl who wants everyone on the show to couple up with everyone else. In fact, aside from Glenn and Maggie (whom I was also shipping because… how cute were they?), I couldn’t care less about who ends up with whom… but I’m just not ready to let go of the idea of Carol and Daryl falling in love. Wow, tangent.

Right off the bat, I recognized Lee Norris from One Tree Hill (he was called Mouth on that show lol)! The first time I ever saw him was on a show called The Torkelsons (which I bought on a VHS Tape labeled “American Shows” from a garage sale in the school courtyard, back in the early 90’s, only to find out that the tape had that distorted white line going through the middle of the screen, throughout the whole thing, but thankfully Dad got Orbit shortly after, which had channels like Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, etc… that aired shows like The Torklesons, Blossom, Clarissa Explains It All, Sweet Valley High, Flash Forward, Boy Meets World, etc..). Anywho, Lee Norris has a very distinctive voice, which is how I recognized him immediately, despite the facial hair.

In my opinion, the most exciting part of this episode was when Morales popped back up (from Season 1) and pulled a gun on Rick. Just like I predicted, Rick is going to die and Carl is going to take over. I’m only half serious because I highly doubt people would still watch the next few seasons of The Walking Dead sans Rick… but then again, you never know. Honestly, I’m more curious about Negan and Father Gabriel (how are they going to get out of that?) so Negan better get some airtime next episode… or else. The premiere of this season’s Talking Dead was awesome! They had the entire cast on the show (kinda’ thought it was a one-time thing that they just did for Glenn but guess not) which was so fun!

Hope you had a Happy Halloween!
