Carrefour Hypermarket Haulage

I don’t normally shop at Carrefour at the Avenues, but I do tend to park my car in their designated underground parking area quite often. Quite frankly, the Avenues is huge, which makes it easy for people to get lost (just me? okay!) in the underground parking area. That’s why I prefer having someone else (anyone else, really) take me to the Avenues rather than driving myself there. Even after all these years, I still can’t remember which escalator leads up to which area of the mall. They all look pretty much the same to me. That’s why, when I’m not parking outside (Ikea parking or Forever 21 parking), I’ll go for the underground parking at Carrefour. I know what to look for (shopping carts on a flattened escalator), I know where it takes me (to Bath & Body Works and Boots facing Carrefour), and I know how to get back to my car (using the Carrefour escalators as a focal point lawl). In addition to all that, using my phone, I’ll snap a photo of the number on the column (just to be safe). You might think that’s overkill but I actually got lost down there once (whilst wearing uncomfortable shoes). It wasn’t pretty. It felt like I was in Mad Max and it was survival of the fittest! After going around in circles for what felt like hours (30 mins in reality), and when I couldn’t walk any longer (I was dying!) I gave up and plopped down on the nearest sidewalk and prepared my goodbyes. My mom told me to quit whining (no sympathy whatsoever) and get back home because it was getting late. Luckily, they’ve got a protocol in place for this sort of thing at the Avenues. The security guys roaming around the underground parking area have these little golf carts that they can drive you around in, until you find your car! So… anyways, I don’t normally shop at Carrefour but this time instead of zipping past it (on my way to Bath & Body Works and Boots and such), I had time to kill so I decided to browse around for a bit. There wasn’t anything particularly exciting but I did come across Essence in their makeup section, which I thought was pretty cool!

How cool does this Cala Wet n Dry Shower Brush look? Aside from the fun neon orange it also had a substantial curve to it (to hug the scalp)! I even poked my finger through the tear-drop cut-out and felt up the bristles which were sufficiently stiff and firm. I feel like I could’ve worded that sentence way better but whatever. The point is, as I’ve mentioned before, stiffer bristles mean it’s probably going to be good (if not great) at detangling my unruly hair, as opposed to the more flexible bristles that sorta’ just skip over knots and tangles. Best of all, this thing is cushion-less! I’m constantly having to replace my brushes that I use in the shower because of the cushion (which can harbor bacteria, grow mold and other gross stuff, even if you can’t see it) namely because it’s not meant to be used as a shower brush. I mean I haven’t seen anything yet, but I’m not eager to find out, so I just replace mine regularly. Another thing that keeps me ahead of the game is that the cushion actually gets unglued (because of the water and heat) so I have to replace the brush regularly anyway. Since this brush is cushion-less, I won’t have to worry about any of that. First impressions, this Cala Wet n Dry Shower Brush is practical (firm bristles to detangle my hair), easy to maintain (cushion-less) and looks cool (fun neon orange)!

Lux Sweet Embrace Soap with fragrance of Passionflower & Vanilla Oil is a repurchase (reviewed here). I bought a pack of the stuff (as opposed to a single bar like last time), only to find them missing that delightful vanilla bakery scent that had enticed me from the start! They don’t smell bad nor do they smell good. In fact, they don’t even have a scent to them, at all, which is puzzling since they’re nowhere near the expiry date. Needless to say I’m quite disappointed.

Close Up Fire + Freeze Toothpaste reminded me of Game of Thrones because it sounded similar to A Song of Ice and Fire. The two really have absolutely nothing to do with each other, but if it makes me happy to associate my toothpaste with GOT then where’s the harm? Speaking of which, Game of Thrones Season 7 was so, so good!

From the L’Oréal booth I picked up 3 of the Color Riche Mono Eyeshadow:
Lumiere 502 Quartz Fume (brown)
Lumiere 500 Gold Mania (gold)
Cameleon 602 Plume de Paon (blue)

I’m assuming Lumiere and Cameleon are the names of the different finishes meaning Quartz Fume (brown) and Gold Mania (gold) will have a satin/glow-y finish whereas Plume de Paon (blue) will have a iridescent/duochrome-y finish.

In all honesty, these shades weren’t my first pick. I mean I’m happy I got my hands on Quartz Fume (brown) but these 3 were the last ones available (there were no other shades to choose from) and there’s just something I find ridiculously appealing about the texture (making me unable to resist getting all 3, regardless of how unflattering I’m sure Plume de Paon (blue) will be on my Arab/Olive/Brown/Tan skintone). I just really enjoy the gel-to-powder texture, regardless of the product or brand! My first was from MAC but I’ve since collected some from Nars, Milani, Lancome, Makeup Revolution, etc… I just can’t get over the texture (even though everyone else already has, at this point)! I just find the texture so cool!

Surprisingly, I also came across an Essence booth! The last time I’d purchased something from Essence was in an online order on Ulta.com years ago (back when they used to accept my credit card and didn’t demand that the shipping address match the credit card owner’s address – which doesn’t work for me because I use a mail-forwarding service). Just like all the other booths at the makeup section at Carrefour, everything had been severely picked over at the Essence booth but I walked away with a few items, regardless.

Essence Colour & Care Lipstick + Avocado Butter in the shade 04 Lookin’ Good (red)
Essence Velvet Stick Matt Lip Colour in the shade 01 Nude Hero (nude)

I only picked up 2 lip products; a red lipbalm because red gives lips that juicy look that’s quite flattering and a nude velvet stick because nude is the most wearable on an everyday basis.

Essence Valentine Who Cares? Smokey Eyeshadow Stick in the shade Love Is In The Air
Essence Liquid Ink Eyeliner
Essence Extreme Lasting Eye Pencil in the shade 01 Blacklove
Essence Forbidden Volume False Lash Mascara Top Coat

I’m not big on eyeshadow sticks but I couldn’t resist this gorgeous taupe in the shade Love is in the Air! I also picked up a liquid eyeliner and a pencil eyeliner, both in black obviously. The brush that appealed to me the most on all the mascaras was the Forbidden Volume False Lash Mascara Top Coat so I had to get that as well.

Essence Concealer Brush
Essence Eyebrow Brush
Essence Pencil Sharpener

As I was heading away from the Essence booth, I spotted a few cute brushes so I picked out 2 (concealer and eyebrow) and a pencil sharpener for good measure. I figure the Concealer Brush would be great for packing on color on the lid, especially when it comes to the Colourpop Super Shock Shadows and the Eyebrow Brush could double as a liner brush. Pencil Sharpeners are always handy (mine keep disappearing whenever I need them the most!).

Overall, I feel like I got a decent selection of Essence products to play around with and get reacquainted with the brand. Aside from the mascara, which I chose based on the tester’s brush, I know next to nothing about any of these products. Who knows? Maybe my next “holy grail” might be in the bunch! I can’t wait to find out if the lippies are scented, or better yet, flavored!
