I’ve always loved Daft Punk! They make great music! Technologic happens to be one of my all time favorite songs, to this day! I also really love Aerodynamic (that guitar solo is fire)! I believe that the French Duo, like all visionaries, are way ahead of their time! I’m utterly charmed by the fact that they never, ever remove their helmets which to me, makes them ridiculously endearing!
I first came across their music in the early 2000’s (around the time Melody Hits was launched; which was a channel that alternated between Non-Arabic Music for me and Arab Music for everyone else in my family). I was instantly attracted to the Anime (or Manga as it’s called in Europe) in Daft Punk’s Music Videos! The Anime style seemed very late 70’s (think along the lines of Captain Harlock) which I’m very partial to and actually find quite beautiful!
I thought it was from an actual Anime that already existed so I tried hunting it down for awhile before it dawned on me that this was an original. It was actually produced by Daft Punk and Toei Animation under the supervision of Daft Punk’s childhood hero, Leiji Matsumoto (creator of Space Pirate Captain Harlock)! Daft Punk revealed in an interview that Captain Harlock was a great influence on them in their childhood.
Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem is the visual realization of the Discovery Album. The 65 minute musical film (no dialogue) coincides with the tracks on that album. I won’t go into too much on the off-chance that you might be interested in watching it but basically each song shows a little bit more of the story. The Discovery Album was released in 2001. The Interstella 5555 film was released in 2003.
I first heard this song when it was featured on an episode of the The O.C. (such a cute girly show!) and became obsessed with it, naturally! I was delighted to find out that it was yet another great song by Daft Punk! I love listening to Technologic, especially when I’m driving. With that being said, for some strange reason, I always get into a fender-bender whenever I play it in my car, no exceptions. The last time was this past Saturday (which makes a total of 7 car accidents all involving Technologic) when I was at Sultan Center (Souk Sharq) and accidentally reversed into another parked car… which happened to be a Bentley ^_^;
Anyways, Harder, Better, Faster, Strong was also one of the songs on the Discovery Album and consequentially also in the movie Interstella 5555. When Daft Punk released a live version their song in 2007, Kanye West (aka Yeezy aka Pablo aka whatever-else-he-calls-himself) came out with his own version that same year. Daft Punk also produced three other songs on Kanye’s Yeezus Album.
In 2010 Daft Punk composed the score for the Disney Movie Tron: Legacy. They even had a cameo appearance in the movie (still wearing their helmets lawl)!
In 2013 Daft Punk featured Pharell Williams and Nile Rodgers on Get Lucky. It’s such a chill song! At one point, everyone in the world was listening to it. There’s also a Oud version of Get Lucky which I really like as well and totally recommend.
I was never really a fan of The Weeknd up until he partnered up with Daft Punk for Starboy. Their other collab I Feel It Coming is seriously good too but I’m obsessed with Starboy ever since it first came out! I always blast this in my car whenever I’m driving! The lyrics pretty much seem like gibberish to me (“house so empty, need a centerpiece“) but I love the song, regardless! I especially love the part where Daft Punk appear in the painting (still decked out in their robot helmets) so endearing! Honestly, I feel like those two could not be cooler nor cuter if they tried!
I <3 Daft Punk!!!!
