Today I’m going to talk about a moisturizer from the brand Jergens. I’m actually surprised that not a lot of people talk about this. Admittedly it’s been around (worldwide) since forever but I only noticed it in Kuwait during the early 2000’s which is understandable as Kuwait is a developing country and all #thirdworldproblems Growing up, I used to hoard Jergens self-tanning moisturizers during summer vacations in Europe with my family and bring them back as gifts for my friends. We loved the Jergens “Natural Glow” range because it included gradual self-tanning moisturizers specially formulated to be used on the face, as well as gradual self-tanning body moisturizers. Eventually my family and I stopped vacationing in Europe which consequentially led to my supply running out. Even when the doors of online shopping were opened to me back in 2007 via Aramex (Shop&Ship Service) I still could not order anything from the “Natural Glow” range because it exceeded the “safety” limit. Regardless of what service you are using, online shopping comes with certain restrictions in Kuwait. Check out my Throwback Thursday: Philosophy post as I go into a little more detail about those restrictions. So over the years, I just sort of forgot about the Jergens Natural Glow Gradual Self-Tanning Moisturizers.
I saw this moisturizer on the shelf at our local cooperative but wasn’t that impressed until I remembered that the “Natural Glow” products that my friends and I had fallen in love with many years ago happened to be by the same brand, Jergens, which is the only reason I decided to purchase this moisturizer. There were several scents available for purchase but I decided to go with the Original Scent. Up to that point, I had only been using Cocoa Butter Body Butter or Strawberry Puree Body Lotion both from The Body Shop repurchasing and alternating for years between the two so I was pretty much bored of them because as we all know, familiarity breeds contempt. Keep in mind that this was years before Bath and Body Works opened up in Kuwait so options were very limited. Cocoa Butter Body Butter smelled absolutely divine and I loved what it did for my skin (long-term benefits) but I was annoyed at how greasy it was when you first applied it. The Strawberry Puree Body Lotion (mentioned in The Body Shop Haulage post) absorbed pretty quickly and made my skin feel velvet-y soft for as long as I was using it (nothing long-term) but I was bored of the artificial strawberry scent. I still loved them, particularly the Strawberry Puree Body Lotion and would go back to repurchase them again and again over the years but for the time being I needed a change.
Jergens had a good selection of moisturizers catering to different needs including Age Defying, Skin Firming, Sensitive Skin Relief, Soothing Aloe Relief, Ultra Healing, Overnight Repair, Daily Moisture, Shea Butter and Original Scent. I was relatively young at the time so obviously I decided against anything anti-aging, repairing, or firming and my skin was far from sensitive so those were out too leaving Daily Moisture, Shea Butter and Original Scent for me to choose from. I chose the Original Scent because I was curious about the classic Cherry-Almond scent. Normally, I cannot stand the scent of cherries, artificial or otherwise but I was quite curious as to what these two would smell like together. Quite frankly, at the time, I thought the idea of almond-scented anything was such a novel idea (again, this was years ago) especially since in my mind, I always associate the scent of almonds with Almond Sherbet (Sherbet Baythaan) which is a sweet, milky, almond-based drink best served chilled and usually reserved for the holy month of Ramadan (think along the lines of what Eggnog is to Christmas). I was actually quite surprised by the cherry-almond scent. For some reason I had been expecting a sickly sweet Oriental scent or at the very least an overwhelmingly “grandma scent” (the kind you can smell on L’Oreal mascaras). This Original Scent Moisturizer smelled like neither of those things. In fact, I would describe it as quite a delicate fragrance. The scent is so gentle that it doesn’t interfere with the scent of any other products I might be using at the time (deo, body mist, perfume, hair mist, etc…). It smelled clean in a way that reminds me of soap but it also had a very slight hint of sweetness to it with the almond scent being more dominant than the cherry scent. It’s no wonder Jergens calls this Cherry-Almond scent a classic. Every time I caught a whiff of this on my skin, I felt quite feminine and lady-like.
To this day, I have yet to see a moisturizer that performs as well as this Jergens Cherry-Almond Moisturizer. For starters, I love the way this just smooths onto my skin. I also love how quickly it absorbs into it. Most of all, I love the fact that this gives me the softest skin ever! No joke, I always get compliments on how soft my hands are. Honestly, I just slather this stuff on if I know I’m going to an event that’s going to include a lot of hand-shaking (a little tip for you business women out there). As I’ve said before, if it’s not a huge difference, then I probably won’t notice it. The fact that I’ve picked up on how soft this moisturizer makes my skin feel is a testament to how good the product is. I’m not very diligent when it comes to moisturizing regularly but because I can visibly see and feel the difference in the texture of my skin as I’m applying this Jergens moisturizer, that makes it worth the hassle, at least to me.
Listed among the other ingredients on the back are Glycerin and Lanolin Oil which are humectants (attract moisture to the skin) so that partially explains it. I’ve used many products that included those two before but never with the same result I get from the Jergens moisturizer so I’m guessing it’s all in the formulation. Whatever it is, I’m obssessed! It comes in these sizes: 200ml, 400ml, and 600ml. The first photo is the 200ml and 600ml moisturizers side-by-side. As you can see the 200ml comes with a flip-top cap whereas the 600ml comes with a pump dispenser. I used to have several of the 200ml stashed everywhere (work, college, car, etc…) and I remember wishing Jergens would come out with a smaller, more portable size to take with me on-the-go as opposed to lugging the 200ml one around everywhere in my handbag (many years later, still the same problem).
I’m very pleased with the 600ml though because it’s quite convenient. Even when the smaller ones surprise me (usually at the worst time ever) by running out, I always have this huge 600ml as backup. It’s strategically placed on my night-stand so I can slather this stuff on before going to sleep. Also, hello, pump dispenser. That in and of itself is super convenient when I’m in a rush to get out the door but I’m carrying something so I don’t have full use of both hands. I can just pump a little into my cupped hand, lock up, get in the car and proceed to moisturize as the engine heats up. I prefer the packaging on the larger moisturizer more than the smaller one because its more rounded and over-all cuter. That said, because it’s so big and takes forever to go through, I can get bored of the cherry-almond scent so I’ll switch to something else for awhile before missing it and eventually going back and consequentially falling in love with the classic scent all over again.
Here we have the 600ml Original Scent Moisturizer, 200ml Original Scent Moisturizer, Foot Cream, and All-Purpose Face Cream. I loved the Jergens Original Scent Moisturizer so much that it influenced me to try out a couple of their other products such as the Foot Cream and All-Purpose Face Cream (which I’ve reviewed here). I don’t have any Natural Glow products to show you because that was decades ago (not really but almost). Jergens products are quite inexpensive and you can find them at almost every drugstore, co-op, and such in the country (and abroad). Nothing but nothing, in my entire life has ever made my skin as soft as this Jergens Moisturizer in the Original Scent which is what makes this particular moisturizer my holy grail moisturizer. I might stray because I like trying out different products (especially scented ones) but this light-weight, cherry-almond scented, skin-softening moisturizer is my be-all and end-all because it gives me supah soft skin!
