Hair Trend: Ombré Hair Color

Jessica Biel

Ombré is the french word for shadow and usually refers to the gradiation of color, from dark to light.  It’s a very pretty effect which makes it no wonder that this trend keeps resurfacing every few years or so. Remember the Ombre Bag/Purse Trend of ’08? Gorgeous!

Once again, the Ombré trend has reappeared in the beauty world only to be reincarnated this time as a hair statement. Women, the world over, are actually flocking to hair salons and asking for darker roots. The idea is to have dark hair at the top with lighter tips at the bottom, to mimic the effect of naturally sun-kissed locks à  la surfer-girl chic.

Cameron Diaz

Personally, I’ve been sporting the Ombré Color Hair Trend since last summer and it’s not by choice either. My natural hair color is dark brown, almost black but I get it dyed a warm-based blonde color with super-skinny highlights (because I think chunky highlights are tacky) all over in a cool-based blonde. Every time I go to Jacques Dessange to touch up my roots, Sanaa (my favorite hair dresser in the salon) refuses to match my roots to the rest of my hair. Instead, she dyes the roots a dark blonde color while the rest of my hair is more of a lighter blonde. So the end result is sort of like Cameron’s hair except mine is waist-length.

Just between you and me, I kinda’ like this trend on myself because it’s more forgiving. I can wait longer between touch-ups now and when I finally do go, my hair no longer needs to be stripped of its color (therefore damaging it) before applying the hair dye. Foundation is no longer a necessity but more of an option. Basically, Ombré Hair Color translates to me as low-maintenance, which I love! Here are some pictures (courtesy of google) in no particular order of A-listers sporting different variations of the Ombré Hair Color Trend.

Tips&Tricks: If you’re going for a more flattering look, go for complimentary shades (for example, 1st photo of Jessica Biel, 1st photo of Lauren Conrad). If you’re going for a more edgy look, go for contrasting shades (for example, 2nd photo of Jessica Biel, 2nd photo of Lauren Conrad).

  1. Oh my gosh ! I have been ever so longing to highlight or dye my hair. I have been growing my hair out long so that I can give it layers and a cool color. I am 13 years old and I don’t know what I want to do with my hair. I love Jessica Biels hair, it is absolutely gorgeous ! Yet, I also love the first edgy Ashlee Simpson look as well. I wish my hairstylist can do some coloring like that to my hair ! I wonder what I should do…..

  2. Hi Simone, welcome to my blog and I totally agree with you on the ombre hair trend even though it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, I love it :)

Heya Kayla, I’m glad you found my blog! Lucky for you there are so many things you can try first before you do anything to your hair that you can’t change back. For example, clip-in hair streaks add a pop of color and once you get bored of it, just take the clip out. If you really want to change your hair color, then ask your guardian to take you to the salon and let you color a small section of your hair at the tip and see how you like it. If you like the result, you can go back for more, but if you don’t like it, you can just get it cut off. Discuss it with an older female first because they usually have more experience. Hope this was helpful :)
