M•A•C describes their Eye Kohl as:
A soft-on pencil liner that lines, defines and shades the eyes with rich colour and a silky-smooth, matte/pearl finish. Ophthalmologist tested.
Yeah, I’m not particularly comfortable with that description even though I’m as liberal as they come. Also ophthalmologist tested is SO not the same as ophthalmologist approved but okay. Moving on…
Packaging: M•A•C Eye Kohl in Minted is from the permanent line, meaning you may buy this whenever you please because it is not a limited edition item. For (KD5/750) you get 1.45g/0.05oz which isn’t too far off from the actual price, ($14.50) surprisingly we’re not being ripped off… by that much.
As you can see from the photos, at a first glance, MAC’s packaging is no-nonsense all-black with all the info (ingredients, etc…) printed in white but if you click on the image for a close-up, you will see that there’s actually tiny flecks of white micro-glitter which is a nice touch. Wouldn’t expect any less from a prestigious yet edgy brand like M•A•C. It’s the small things that make a huge difference, or so I think.
The only color is a swatch on the top of the box with the name of the shade printed at the center of the swatch, and a swatch at the bottom of the product itself. This makes life easier when you’re in a hurry and can’t be bothered by taking the cap off each and every kohl/eyeliner pencil you’ve got ’till you find the one you’re looking for. All you gotta do is just check the swatch for the color you’re looking for. Simple, yet effective.
Color: Minted is a beautiful shimmery emerald green on most medium-dark skin tones. Those with lighter skin tones can find that this can look almost turquoise on them, even teal on the more fairer skin tones, but no matter what skin tone you are, you are guaranteed a gorgeous jewel-toned pop of color.
Here’s a close-up of Minted Eye Kohl without flash. It’s a beautiful dark green.
See all the difference using flash lighting can make? You can see all those itty bitty micro-glitters that give it that “pearl” finish, mentioned in the excerpt I nicked from the M•A•C website.
Swatched on the lightest part of my wrist, Minted pulls a little teal.
Swatched on my arm, it’s a true kelly green.
At a different angle, the “pearl” effect is more apparent.
Properties: It’s firm enough that I can draw a defined line with this and it won’t budge but it’s soft enough to be smoked out (hence eye kohl, derp). Either way, this looks great. I’ve even worn it as an eyeshadow and it blended out superbly. Mostly I just love tightlining with it because it makes my brown eyes pop!
Here’s what my eye looks like before: no makeup at all.
Here’s what my eye looks like after: Nothing besides “Minted” Eye Kohl on my upper and lower lashline aka tightlined. “Minted” really makes my brown eyes pop! They almost look like a completely different color with this stuff on!
